Before the big day, the bride and groom will have to fulfil some legal requirements. Foreigners wishing to celebrate their marriage in Mauritius should apply for a certificate of non-citizens/non-residents at the Central Civil Status Office (Marriage Application Form) and send the following documents at least 10 weeks before the date of the ceremony. Three copies of each document are required. The first copies are for the Mauritian Central Civil Status Office and the second for your embassy in Mauritius. You will keep the third set of copies with you during all the formalities. These documents must be in French or English (or a translation certified by an official translator).

Make sure to bring with you all the ORIGINALS of all required documentation for all the formalities in Mauritius!

Required documents that both groom and bride must send beforehand:

• Passport (copies of the pages containing passport number, photo, issue/expiry dates)
• Copies of birth certificate dated less than 3 months before your wedding date
• Copies of both Identity Cards
• Certificate of residence issued by the Mayor and stating the address of residence
• Declaration of honour in the profession of the future spouses
• Marriage Application Form duly completed

In some cases, the following documents must be provided:

• Any document relating to divorce, widow/widower or change of name
• Proof in case of change of name (deed poll)
• If divorced, a decree absolute
• If widowed, the former spouse’s death certificate and previous marriage certificate
• If adopted, an adoption certificate
• Notarized statement in case of prenuptial agreement

Note: According to Mauritian laws, if the bride is a widower or has been divorced for less than 300 days before the wedding, a mandatory pregnancy test is required.

It is advisable to start the following legal procedures in Mauritius at least three days before the scheduled date of the ceremony.

• Verification of the original documents at the Central Civil Status Office in Port-Louis (compliance certificate will be issued)
• An attorney at law will verify the original documents and give you an official certificate
• Before the Chief registrar in Supreme Court, you will swear an affidavit
• Presentation of original documents to an official of your embassy
• Presentation of your original documents to the civil status office in the vicinity of the hotel for the banns publication
• Civil marriage may be celebrated 24 hours after this last formality

 Note: If a wedding is celebrated at the hotel or on any private premises, a payment has to be made at the Central Civil Status office.

• You will have to go back to Port-Louis so the Prime Minister’s Office can affix the Prime Minister’s apostille on your marriage certificate to authenticate it.
• The marriage act must be given to your embassy to edit your family record book and officially register your marriage
